You are planning a trip to Disney World because you work very hard and want to treat your family to a much deserved vacation. Disney World is the trip of a lifetime, but it can be very overwhelming and confusing if you are not familiar with the territory. My (pregnant) wife and I took our two small children to Disney in October (brought the in-laws too). With our experiences, we learned a lot about what to do and what not to do concerning a trip to Orlando. Here is my must follow advice for your Disney World Vacation.
My first bit of advice for your Disney World vacation concerns the use of strollers. The first question is, should you bring your own stroller. Absolutely! Renting strollers is expensive and you will still need them when you are traveling to the different parks or if you go to downtown Disney.
I have a four year old and a 2 year old. We thought it would be great to bring our new side by side jogging stroller. This enormous stroller is great when we take the kids on a walk around the block, but very awkward and cumbersome for Disney World. If you are taking a bus, you have to fold your stroller up each time. These large strollers still get in the way when folded up. Not to mention, it made it hard for navigating around large crowds.
If you have a couple of small children I would do one of two things. Either buy some cheap umbrella strollers or bring a "front to back" style stroller.
If you have smaller children, bring some other people with you that can help out. I can't imagine what it would have been like if my in-laws had not been with. My 2 year old son is very moody so it was nice to have his grandma or grandpa walk with him for awhile so that I could take my 4 year old daughter on some rides. My wife and I wanted to go to mass on Sunday so we were able to go alone which was great!
We learned the hard way that you need to make the trip at least a week long. We went for four days due to my work schedule (and money). Being that we had little time, we wanted to squeeze as many things in as possible. We did that at the expense of our kids getting WAY too tired by the end of the day. It was too much for them and us. Next time, we plan on staying at least a week and being able to relax and swim at the hotel more.
My last piece of advice for your Disney World Vacation is watch out for insanely expensive food and drinks! A bottle of water will run you at least 3 dollars, and you will need it when the sun is beating down on you all day. We have a small diaper bag that is insulated. You keep a couple of ice packs in there and bring your own water and juice. Bring some snacks so you don't have to buy food every time you get hungry. We stopped at the first restaurant in the Magic Kingdom that we saw. Boy what a mistake. It was very expensive and we had to wait 45 minutes (the month we went to Disney wasn't even their peak time). We learned later if we had just looked at our map we could have eaten somewhere else for much cheaper. The map highlights the different places to eat and has symbols showing you what price category they fall into.
Disney World can be the time of you and your kid's life, just make sure to do your homework. Talk to others that have been there and learn from their mistakes.
